Arsenal winger Willian is poised to leave Arsenal on a free transfer to join Corinthians, opting to waive the remainder of his salary. The Brazilian international is set to tear up the remaining two years of his contract and take a 70% reduction in salary to leave Arsenal this summer.
The 33-year-old joined Arsenal last year on a three year contract with a reported £190,000 a week in salary, but failed to make a meaningful impact.
Sky Sports and numerous other agencies now report that Willian is close to terminating his Arsenal contract in favour of returning to Brazil.
According to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol, Arsenal directors are said to be ‘amazed’ by Willian’s gesture.
He’s set to join Corinthians, the club where he started his career, on a massively reduced salary with a move expected to be announced on Monday.
The players father, Vieira da Silva, confirmed to the Arsenal 442 news account that the deal was ‘99.9%’ complete.
Willian featured 37 times for Arsenal in all competitions and managed just one goal in the Premier League during his time in North London.
