Player Ratings: Brentford 2-0 Arsenal

Arsenal offered little in attack as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat on the opening day of the season against newly promoted Brentford. The players looked uninspired and relied too heavily on Kieran Tierney and Emile Smith Rowe but failed to create any meaningful chances in a thoroughly poor performance.

Defence

Bernd Leno: Responded well to an early test but he needed to do better at his near post on Brentford opener. Made a handful of decent stops in the second half but was beaten again by a Brentford throw in. Not his best night. 5.0/10

Callum Chambers: Had to do better on the Brentford opening goal, gave Canos time and space to cut into the box and shoot. 4/10

Ben White: Tried to distribute from deep early on but his crosses didn’t find their target. Worked well on the ball but didn’t look settled and had to do better on the second Brentford goal. A muddling debut. 5.0/10

Pablo Mari: All too easily caught out by Mbeumo early on and looked unsettled from the outset. Lacked for pace and spent too long flapping his arms and shouting at his teammates. 4.0/10

Kieran Tierney: Found space down the left and managed to get in some decent crosses. Had a decent shot deflected just wide and continued to be one of the few attacking threats that Arsenal could rely on. 6.5/10

Midfield

Sambi Lokonga: In the right place at the right time to snuff out some Brentford chances in the box and showed some encouraging touches when higher up the pitch as well as linking up well with ESR. A solid debut. 6.5/10

Granit Xhaka: Solid enough in the opening ’45 and had a good effort saved when Arsenal pressed later in the game. Almost caught out in front of goal and needed to be more of a leader tonight. 5.5/10

Emile Smith Rowe: Really positive start to the game, breaking the lines and creating space when Arsenal were under pressure. Had a great solo effort saved by the keeper early in the second half and looked the brightest player on the pitch. 7.0/10

Attack

Gabriel Martinelli: Struggled to get into the game or put any real pressure on the Brentford goal. Moved into the centre with Saka’s arrival and had a half chance. 5.0/10

Nicolas Pepe: A little too one dimensional in his approach and was all too easily thwarted by the Brentford back line. Looked better in the second half and moved into the centre to try and offer more. Forced a good save from Raya late on. 5.0/10

Folarin Balogun: Saw precious little of the ball and one half chance aside, he was pretty anonymous for the first half. Substituted for Saka early into the second half. 5.0/10

Substitutes:

Bukayo Saka: Injected some pace and creativity when he came on. A decent cameo. 6.5/10

Reiss Nelson: Didn’t really get a chance to make a meaningful impact on the game. 5.0/10

Nuno Tavares: N/A
