Ligue 1 side have confirmed the arrival of Arsenal midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi on a one year loan deal with an option to buy. A statement on the clubs official website confirmed that the 22-year-old has made the switch and is expected to be signed outright next year:
Mattéo Guendouzi has signed with Olympique de Marseille on a one-year loan with option to buy. Guendouzi was born on April 14, 1999 in Poissy. In 2014, he left the Paris region to join the FC Lorient training center. In Brittany, the midfielder evolved with the youth teams until joining the first team. He made his Ligue 1 debut in October 2016 against Nantes. Despite the relegation of the Merlus, he remains at Lorient in 2017-2018 and played 21 games. At the end of the season, he decided to sign for Arsenal. In two seasons with the Gunners, he played 82 games, scored 1 goal and played in the 2019 Europa League final (lost to Chelsea).
His performances with the London club opened the doors to the France A team, where he was called up twice without ever coming into play. For Les Bleus, Guendouzi featured in U18, U19, U20 and U20 teams.
On the last day of the 2020 transfer window, he was loaned out for one season at Hertha Berlin. In the 2020-2021 campaign, the German club ended the season in 14th place. He played 24 Bundesliga games with a total of 2 goals and an assist.
Mattéo Guendouzi is a modern midfielder, technically strong and with good passing quality. A player of character, he has a good vision of the game. These qualities he will undoubtedly share with the Marseille team.”
