Arsenal are in the strongest position to sign Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic if he chooses to move in the January window. The Gunners are in the market for a new striker, given the uncertain futures of Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette.
Arsenal have been closely linked with Vlahovic in recent weeks, according to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. They report that an offer of €55m plus Lucas Torreira was made to Fiorentina for the Serbian striker.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein offered more insight in his mailbag column today. Ornstein writes that ‘Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future looks bleak, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are approaching the end of their contracts and Folarin Balogun is close to joining Middlesbrough on loan’
For that reason, Arsenal are trying to sign Vlahovic – According to Ornstein, ‘if the 21-year-old is to move in January then, as things stand, Arsenal are in the strongest position to sign him.’
Vlahovic’s contract expires in June 2023 and he won’t renew, so it ‘suits Fiorentina to cash in sooner rather than later.’
Despite that, ‘there is a feeling at Fiorentina that Arsenal are not Vlahovic’s preferred destination — likewise teams such as Tottenham and Newcastle, who have also been linked — and a wider sense in the industry that he favours a switch to Juventus’.
Arsenal are also looking at alternatives like Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, should they fail to land Vlahovic.
